A Film Review By Clyde Ayles
BEYOND GOOD
I remember Bobby Darin. I bought his records, saw his movies and watched him on Bandstand. He was very talented with tons of energy. There were a lot of hit songs, including "Splish Splash" "Dreamlover" "Mack the Knife and "Beyond the Sea". He was a star at a young age. This was outstanding, being as how he was not expected to live past 15 years of age due to a bout with rheumatic fever at 7. His life was not easy though. He found strange things about his Mother and his Sister. He married a beautiful young actress, only to find conflict in their careers, and went through heart surgery. Bobby Darin died at the young age of 37. But he has been resurrected in this outstanding film produced by and starring the very talented KEVIN SPACEY. To Mr. Spacey this was a labor of love. He said he was born to play Bobby Darin and I believe him. He performs the songs himself and he is perfect. While resembling Mr. Darin at more times than none, he explains this away by having the singer meeting up with and being guided by himself as a boy. It works very well, it reminded me of "Delovely". We follow his career as a young singer as he wrote 'Splish Splash" in 15 minutes and made it a hit. In time he makes a movie costarring SANDRA DEE, a very popular young star at that time. He courts her and marries her. I watched KATE BOSWORTH portray Ms Dee with amazement. She was uncanny. We watch the marriage fall apart, we watch Bobby's downfall, and we watch him try for a comeback as a war protest singer, only to fail. I know that the teenagers of today do not know who Bobby Darin is. His time has passed. But thanks to Mr, Spacey, he lives again. SEE YA AT THE MOVIES CLYDE
