King Arthur

A Film Review By Michael l. Voelker         (Film Info Click Here)

Going into the film i expected to see the usual magic and mystery tale of King
Arthur and his knights but this movie is nothing of the sort. Instead Fuqua puts
a reality spin on the story that takes place 1000 years ago.

Arthur and his knights are basically a special elite force of the roman army
and are called upon to rescue the popes favorite grandson from the hands of the
invading army of the Saxons. This basically is the plot for the whole movie so
don't expect any wild turns or anything unexpected. OH yes there is one surprise
gwyonvere is a fierce warrior not a damsel in distress who assists Merlin who
leads a group of people called the woads to fight against anyone who tries to
take control of their land. Fuqua tries to explore the reality of the era but
falls short with a dull storyline and lengthy battle scenes.

Did i forget to mention there is no blood! Don't forget its a pg-13 rating so don't expect any
here which doesn't boad well for you hack and slash fans out there. This `Arthur'
doesn't bother much with love, opting instead to spend a good amount of time
observing the bonds these men shared, along with their frustrations with the
land, and their undying respect for Arthur. Fuqua hints at a love triangle
between Lancelot Arthur and gwyonvere but only by long flirtatious stares and
never actually comes about. Then there is the final battle upon which Arthur is
going to fight apparently by himself after all the men have received clemency
but all is well when the men change their minds and come racing back to fight
once more along Arthurs side. After that lengthy battle (which seems plucked
right out of braveheart) we get our happy ending. It was a good attempt by Fuqua
but If I had to choose between the truth and the myth, the myth is always the
better way to go.
