MUSIC OF THE RIGHT
I don't know why a lot of critics are panning this film. I found it to be very entertaining, beautifully filmed and well acted. Well acted that is by most of the cast. One big exception has got to be MINNIE DRIVER, who had the worst accent. The outstanding performance is EMMY ROSSUM as Christine. She has an innocent beauty and a fine singing voice. GERARD BUTLER is the Phantom, a poor disfigured misguided figure who is so madly in love with Christine, that he will do anything to make her the star of the opera house, even kill. The story of the Phantom has been around for years. There were a few movies including a silent version with Lon Chaney and a really well made version in the 1940's with Claude Rains. A few years ago, Andrew Lloyd Webber produced a stage version with some wonderful haunting songs. I saw it on Broadway in New York and loved it. Now the musical has been put on the big screen by JOEL SCHUMACHER (yes, the same man who killed the Batman franchise_. But this time he has come through. Everything is here, the falling chandelier, the haunting figure of the phantom in the shadows of the backstage curtains. The music is faithfully reproduced. If you can't see the play, see the film. You will be humming the beautiful songs like "The Music of the Night" and "This Is All I Ask" SEE YA AT THE MOVIES CLYDE
