A Film Review By Clyde Ayles
ANYWAY IT'S GOOD
"SIDEWAYS " is one of those little films that mostly plays in New York, or the art houses. It is a very funny film that should not be missed. The story concerns two men who are the best of friends, one recently divorced and still mourning over the fact, the other will be getting married in a week. They get together for a fun? week at a golf resort They check into a hotel and make plans for a great week that will help make the divorcee forget and give the soon to be groom one last fling at freedom. Needless to say, it doesn't work out that way. THOMAS HADEN CHURCH (from T.V's Wings) is the groom and PAUL GIAMATTI (American Splender) is the ex groom. The plan is to play golf and relax, but it doesn't work that way. CHURCH still has the sex drive in him and he means to explore it. He meets a waitress (VIRGINIA MADSEN ) and her friend (SANDRA OH) They go on a double date that winds up a dud because Giamatti is a real drag. It seems that besides being a loser at love, he is a loser at writing. He has written a book that will not be published. There is one verry funny scene where after bagging a convenience store clerk and being caught by her husband, Church shows up at the hotel minus his clothes and wallet. He convinces Paul to go to the clerks home to get the wallet. What happens next will have you splitting your sides. This is not only a funny movie but also a bittersweet one that teaches us a little about life. The whole wonderful movie was directed by ALEXANDER PAYNE, who helmed Election and About Schmidt, both in my favorites list. SEE YA AT THE MOVIES CLYDE
