A Film Review By Clyde Ayles
A TOUGH TEEN DRAMA
Mean Creek opens in a school yard where a bully is picking on a smaller kid. The bully smacks the kid on the head. The smaller kid is Sam (played by Rory Culkin, yes, one of the many Culkins ). He is small for his age although very bright. He has become the perfect victim for George the bully (played by Josh Peck). He is constantly being picked on over and over again. But now it is time for revenge. Sam's big brother plans a surprise for George. He calls George and invites him to a birthday party for Sam. He will join a group of friends on a boat and a picnic. The group consisting of Ryan Kelly, Trevor Morgan, Carlly Schroeder, and Scott Mechiowicz The prank they plan could have very drastic results. After thinking it over, everyone decides not to go through with the very bad idea. That is everyone but Sam's brother who is a loser, mad at the world for his mistakes. He is the school dropout who never amounted to anything. It starts with a game of truth or dare, and ends in tragedy. This is a story of teenagers trying to do the right thing after the tragedy, with very moving results. The only problem that my friend and I had, was the ending. We were hoping for more, but without warning the screen went blank and up came the end cregits. This is not to say that this is not a good film, it is. The mood is just right, the music fits real well, the young actors are superb. It always amazes me that kids can play thier parts so well. Take a dash of Stand By Me,a pinch of The Rivers Edge, and add some of The Bully abd you have a really fine film called Mean Creek. It's a shame that most of the small independent films do vit get the notice that the big budget films get. A lot of time they are much better. SEE YA AT THE MOVIES CLYDE
