Beauty Shop

A Film Review By Clyde Ayles

NEEDS A NEW HAIRDO

At the end of "Barbershop 2", they introduced us to Gina Norris, a hairdresser who they announced look for the spin-off, "Beauty Shop".  Well, it has arrived at your local Cineplex complete with a great cast. Let's see, we have QUEEN LATIFAH, KEVIN BACON, ALICIA SILVERSTONE, ANDIE MACDOWELL, ALFIE WOODARD, MENA SUVARI, and a group of other assorted characters. Too bad the film can't live up to this starry list of names. We meet Gina (Latifah) again as she is working in the shop owned by swishy Jorge (a great portrayal by Bacon).  After being brow beaten once too often by Jorge, Gina quits with plans to start her own shop. After renting an old broken down beauty shop, she recruits the help of her fellow workers to get it into shape. Everyone follows her, including Silverstone who is the token white trying to be black. Suvari and Macdowell, two society women who believe Gina works miracles on their hair. We have a kid who sells candy to finance his new music video he hopes to make. He uses his video camera to film booty to use in this proposed video, a thing that comes in handy later in the movie. We have a piano teacher (DJIMON HOUNSOU) who lives upstairs from the shop and starts teaching Gina's daughter piano lessons. Everything seems to be going well, a fact that does not set well with Jorge, who is losing clients faster than he can wiggle his ass.  Soon Gina is being harassed by a crooked inspector.    Don't get me wrong, there are some funny scenes in this movie, mainly when Bacon is on the screen. It's just that this is no "Barbershop".   I also loved Gina's "you go girl don't give up" attitude. SEE YA AT THE MOVIES   CLYDE
