A Film Review By Clyde Ayles
FORBIDDEN LOVE
This is a story of the hidden love between two men. There are people who asked me why I saw this film. Three reasons, I am a movie critic, I don't use terms like girlie flick, black movie or such, and i am secure enough with my manhood to sit through this film. It concerns two men, ranch-hand Ennis Del Mar (HEATH LEDGER) and rodeo-rider Jack Twist (JAKE GYLLENHAAL). They fall in love while herding sheep in a remote area of Wyoming. This was in 1963 when this was unheard of. Ennis' father drilled this into his head as a boy by showing him the body of a gay man who had been tortured and murdered . Knowing this is wrong, the men drift apart. Time passes and they both wed two very different women. Jack marries a well to do pretty girl (ANNE HATHAWAY, of the "Princess Diaries" movies, all grown up here. Ennis weds a more down to earth woman (MICHELLE WILLIAMS, of t.v.'s "Dawson's Creek.) One day, after four years, Jack writes to Ennis. They meet again which sparks the affair again. Ennis' wife sees them kissing and beneath the hurt, she prtends to buy the story that they are old fishing buddies. The men go on trips together and rekindle thier love. This leads to tragic moments with the wifes. This film is done in good taste, there are no poking fun moments. This is a touching story of forbidden love. The photography is superb. The shots of the countryside almost make you feel you are there. This moving film was directed by ANG LEE based on a short story by Annie Prouix. This is one of the year's best.
