A Film Review By Clyde Ayles
FAR FROM DEAD
Stop motion animation is one of the oldest forms of filmmaking, and still one of the best. This is where you move an object a little at a time and film it at one frame per minute. This was used on the original "King Kong" by Willis O'Brien, several films by Ray Harryhausen (Jason and the Argonauts), and George Pal in a series of cartoons. TIM BURTON used it to great effect in "Nightmare Before Christmas" Now he brings us "Corpse Bride" a very entertaining feature about love and understanding. In a European village there lives Victor Van Dorts (voiced by the great JOHNNY DEPP) who is about to enter a pre-arranged wedding to Victoria Everglot (voice of EMILY WATSON). Her greedy mother and father feel that the marriage will elevate their social standing. But poor Victor is not happy with this arrangement and he stalls for time and fumbles everything during the ceremony. At the height of his tension, he runs out of the church and eventually winds up in a cemetery. Here he puts the ring on what he believes to be a tree branch sticking out of the ground. But he soon finds out that it is the finger of a long dead yound bride to be who was jilted and murdered on her wedding day. She falls for Victor and wants to marry him. This leads to all sorts of fun and misunderstandings between the world of the living and the world of the dead. HELENA BOTHAM CARTER is the voice of the corpse bride who still seeks love. We also have a villain, a big voiced braggert named Barkis Bittern (RICHARD E. GRANT ) who seeks to marry Victoria with the thoughts that he will inherit her parent's money, not knowing there is none. The music by DANNY ELFMEN is first class all the way. The love triangle between Victor, Victoria, and the corpse bride is the heart of this film. You will enjoy the whole production SEE YA AT THE MOVIES CLYDE
