A Film Review By Paul Perkins
The Name Says It All
One of the biggest past time of my generation is not playing sports, or collecting baseball cards, it is playing video games on the pc on home consuls. I remember playing this one game that I got hook playing on my pc is was called Castle Wolfenstien as well as one of the first games that use first person shooting called DOOM.
Well the new thing in Hollywood is to make movies base on popular video games, like any other films they hit some good one and of course hit some bad ones. The Two best one are Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil. The two bad one are Super Mario Bros, Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead.
The next one up to the big screen is Doom that by the way is one of the most popular games of this planet. It was created in 1993 and since then every gamer in the world knows about it. So it is now on the big screen and here is a little about the story.
Something has gone wrong at a remote scientific research
station on Mars. All research has ceased. Communication has failed. And the
messages that do get through are less than comforting. It's a level 5 quarantine
and the only souls allowed in or out are the Rapid Response Tactical Squad -
hardened Space Marines armed to the teeth with enough firepower to neutralize
the enemy... or so they think. The research being done at Odluval station has
unwittingly opened a door and all hell has broken loose. A legion of nightmarish
creatures of unknown origin lurk behind every wall and stalk the countless rooms
and tunnels of the facility, killing what few people remain.
Sealing off the portal to Earth, Sarge (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), Reaper (Karl
Urban) and their team must use every weapon at their disposal - and some they
find along the way - to carry out their orders: nothing gets out alive.
I love video games I use to play it all the time but of course, when I became a critic and a video storeowner I do not have the time anymore. Therefore, when I hear they are making a movie base on a game I use to love I jump at the chance to check it out and relive my childhood. After watching some duds like Tomb Raider, House of The Dead, and Alone in the Dark. I was hype that Doom is coming out so now it out and let me tell you I was very disappointed in it. The Acting was ok I did not have any problems with the acting I thought everyone held there own. Even so, I thought The Rock could have some more screen time as well as the Lady Sciences to tell more about the monsters. The action screen was ok nothing outstanding.
The story was average to be honest it seem to have some of the Resident Evil story in this film. The special effects were good if they just made the story better, it would be a better movie. Nevertheless, of course they just copied off other types of films. The main shooting scene, which made the game famous, is the last 25 mins of the film. Which I do not know about you but for me it one of the main reason I wanted to check out this film.
Overall Doom is not a good video game turn into a motion picture, I would not say it as bad as House of the Dead or Super Mario Bros but it almost very close to it.
