Herbie Fully Loaded

A Film Review By Clyde Ayles

LOADED WITH FUN

Once there was a lovable little Volkswagon by the name of Herbie. Now Herbie was not your usual car. He had a mind of his own and captured the hearts of everyone who saw his first movie "The Love Bug" in the 1960s. He followed these by "Herbie Rides Again" in 1974, "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo" (1977) and "Herbie Goes Bananas" (1980).  Now here we are in 2005 and Herbie has made a comeback, and he is just as welcome as he always was. This time he is rescued from a junk heap by a young girl (LINDSEY LOHAN) who is trying to pick out a car for her birthday present, thanks to her father (MICHAEL KEATON). As she searches for the car Herbie turns on his charm and wins her over.     We learn that the father, Ray Payton Sr. (Keaton) a NASCAR champ is very over protective of his daughter Maggie who has a dream of following in her father's footsteps.    Back at their residence, their mechanic Kevin (JUSTIN LONG, "Dodgeball) puts Herbie back into shape. We also meet Maggie's brother< Ray Payton Jr. (BRECKIN MEYER, "Road Trip") who is also a driver.

Now the big race is coming up and we meet Trip Murphy, an arrogant in love with himself champion race driver wonderfully portrayed by MATT DILLON. Trip is challenged by Maggie and Herbie to a race. Herbie loses and is claimed by Trip who enters him in a demolition derby. As poor Herbie is being smashed to bits he is saved by Maggie. Her team puts him back in shape again. And just in time for the big race. Going against her father's wishes, Maggie enters Herbie and herself in the race.     The effects are over the top, but very effective. Put your thoughts of real life aside and just lean back in your seat, eat your popcorn, and have a really good time.    Oh yes, there is love in this film as Herbie falls for a now version of the bug.    This fun filled movie was directed by ANGELA ROBINSON (D.E.B.S.) and presented to us by Walt Disney Pictures.   SEE YA AT THE MOVIES   CLYDE
