A Film Review By Clyde Ayles
INTERESTING WORK
DAVID DUCHOVNY (The X Files) has directed an interesting little film titled "House Of D". It tells the story of a young 13 year old boy (ANTON YELCHIN of Hearts in Atlantis" who lives with his mother (TEA LEONI, Mrs. Duchovny in real life). She is an emotionally unstable widow who smokes her life away. He forms a friendship with a mentally challenged school janitor (ROBIN WILLIAMS). The boy's life seems to be going nowhere. One day he is passing a house of detention. As he does, he hears a voice call to him. It is an inmate, a young black woman (ERYKAH BADU) who gives him advice on life. There are all sorts of situations that turn the boy's life around. His mother takes an overdose of pills; the janitor steals a bike for him. The movie opens in Italy where the 13 year old is a grown married man. He tells his story in flashback. Duchovny plays the man. The flashback story takes place in New York's village area. At the last act, we return to the grownup young man as he returns to his roots to visit his old friends. I found this film to be very moving and well filmed. It's a nice coming of age story. Robin Williams gives a nice performance, but he always keeps the same facial expression, sort of like a kid who is getting yelled at. Young Yelchin does a fine job. While mot a grade a movie, it is, as I stated, very interesting.
