A Film Review By Clyde Ayles
NICE BUT TAME
Madagascar is brought to us by the Schreck folks, but without the magic and charm of that film. The animated animals and the voices behind them are fine. We have Alex the lion (BEN STILLER) who struts around the Central Park Zoo like a king as the visitors wildly applauded. We have his best friend Marty the zebra (CHRIS ROCK) who dreams of life on the outside world. And there is Gloria the hippo (JADA PINKETT SMITH) and Melman the giraffe (GAVID SCHWIMMER, whose whining voice always irritated me). One day with the help of some adorable penguins Marty escapes the Zoo taking his friends with him. He hops a slow boat to Madagascar off the coast of Africa. There he meets some goofy, colorful lemurs that include King Julian (SACHA BARON COHAN) and Maurice (CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER). They have some amusing adventures, one of the funniest is Alex turning to the wild side and trying to have Marty for dinner. But soon they find that life is not always greener etc. So they try to find ways to be rescued so they can go back to the life in the Zoo where they were pampered and feed well every day. There are also some clever references to some past films and TV. shows such as "Planet Of The Apes", very clever, and River dance. But these clever moments can't save the show. It was directed by Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath. Three stars for the effort and casting. SEE YA AT THE MOVIES CLYDE
