Rent

A Film Review By Clyde Ayles

PAID IN FULL

Through the years many films have been made from Broadway plays. The latest is "Rent" and in my opinion it is one of the best films of the year. The story takes place in the New York east village where a group of Bohemmians try to express themselves with their art amist poverty, illness, and aids.  They are a group of assorted characters that include a filmmaker, a songwriter, a dancer, two gay women who have a love affair, and the standout, WILSON JERMAINE HEREDA as Angel, a drag queen with aids who holds everyone together. The cast is the original cast from the show with the exception of TAYE DIGGS and ROSARIO DAWSON.  Everyone gives outstanding performances. The songs are top notch. The film will fill you with warmth and love. If you have ever been to east village, as I have a few times, you will notice many familiar sites. No, I did not see the play, but I am hearing different opinions on how faithful the film is. But just let me say that the film stands on it's own as a work of art.  It was directed by CHRIS COLUMBUS ( Home Alone) who captured life in it's fullness.   SEE YA AT THE MOVIES   CLYDE
