Sahara

A Film Review By Clyde Ayles

HERE WE GO AGAIN

Indiana Jones comes in many faces. First we had the original, Harrison Ford; lately we had Nicholas Cage in "National Treasure", now we have MATHEW McCONAUGHEY in "Sahara". Who will be next?   We all loved Harrison, Cage was good in "Treasure", but McConaughey?, Well, he isn’t neither.  In this film, he plays explorer Dirk Pitt,a real he-man name if there ever was one, searches for a civil war battleship that's buried in the desert. Along the way he tries to prevent a haz toxin from destroying the world's water supply. Oh yes, he also finds a treasure of lost gold coins. Gee, that's a lot in two hours. Of course he is helped by a sidekick, Al Giordino (the annoying STEVE ZAHN) and Dr. Eva Rojas (PENELOPE CRUZ, who also turns into the love interest)  Surprised?. While there is plenty of action going on, this movie never seems to grab you the way the Indiana Jones films did. Even "National Treasure" was more enjoyable. Based on a novel by Clive Cussler, it was directed by Breck Eisner. It was executive produced by McConaughey, who worked for seven years to bring the novel to the big screen. It had to look better on paper. Also on hand is one of my favorite actors, WIILIAM H. MACY.   My friend, newspaper film critic Lou Gaul stated that this movie reminded him more of the old Bob Hope / Bing Crosby road pictures than a great action film. I agree.
