The Amityville Horror

A Film Review By Clyde Ayles

AMITYVILLE DUMB

Jay Anson wrote a novel about a family who move into a house in Long Island, N. Y.  True story or not, it states that in 1974, A man killed his whole family in this house. He claimed that voices told him to do it. Now, a year later, the Lutz family moved into this house with some very bad and scary results. The house was haunted by the memories of this murder. Voices tell them to get out, green ooze comes out of the walls, and many other things take place.  In 1979, they made a movie of this story. It starred James Brolin and Margot Kidder, While not a great movie by any means, it was very haunting and eerie. It was one of those films that could make you not sleep that night after you saw it.  Now here we are into 2005 and we have a remake in the theatres. I have one big thought, WHY?   This version stars RYAN REYNOLDS and MELISSA GEORGE as the Lutz's who move into the house with three kids in tow. Well all I can say is director ANDREW DOUGLAS has turned this movie into a bad grade b horror flick, and not a very good one at that. Not once did I find this film scary or haunting. In fact, the audience I saw it with was laughing most of the time. Mr. Reynolds does a very bad imitation of Jack Nicholson in "The Shining". Wait till you see the baby sitter they hire, Hollywood hooker on crack. The priest, who was well presented in the 1979 version, played by top actor Rod Steiger, is reduced to a joke in this new version. All I can say, is this is a bad remake. Watch the original on DVD.  SEE YA AT THE MOVIES   CLYDE
