The Interpreter

A Film Review By Clyde Ayles

AN INTRIGING PEICE OF WORK

I was never a big fan of NICOLE KIDMAN'S acting ability.  I always thought she was overrated.. But I take some of that back after seeing her latest, "The Interpreter" In this very edge of your seat drama, she is Silvia Broome, a translator who grew up in a fictional town in the African nation.  Out of this town comes a liberator turned despot , President Zuwanie (EARL CAMERON)  who     is about to address the United Nations even though   he is in the middle of accusations of genocide against him. Sylvia overhears a plot to assassinate Zuwanie spoken in a rare language that she happens to speak. She reports this to the F.B.I.   Federal agent Tobin Keller SEAN PENN, who I consider one of the finest actors around today, and his partner Dot Woods (CATHERINE KEENER) are sent to investigate. In the process they find all kinds of events that make them doubt Silvia's story.  This leads to all sorts of good old fashioned suspense.   This fine film was directed by SYDNEY POLLACK (The Firm, Absence of Malice, Tootsie and a slew of top movies).  It must also be noted that this movie was filmed inside the U.N., a coop that even the great Alfred Hitchcock could not secure.
