A Film Review By Clyde Ayles
GOOD GAME
So far this year we have been presented with two remakes? Of good movies. "The Amityville Horror" and "House of Wax" Neither of these would I recommend. Coming up we have "Charley and the Chocolate Factory" I love Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, but the previews have me wondering. Well, playing right now on your theatre screen is "The Longest Yard" a remake of a 1974 film that was a hit at the box office for BURT REYNOLDS who was top of his form then. He played a disgraced former quarterback named Paul Crewe, who is sent to jail for wrecking his girlfriend's car, along with several police cars while he is drunk. To make it worse, he batters a couple of cops. . While in prison he is recruited to head up an inmate football team for a game against the prison guards. Well, Reynolds was very convincing in the role. He had the physical presence and the swagger to pull it off. Now we have ADAM SANDLER in the role. Now I must tell you, I am not a huge Sandler fan, and I wondered if he could fill the shoes. I must confess, he did it. He toned down his goofy ways and gave a great performance. We also have CHRIS ROCK, who was very affective as Crewe's cellmate Caretaker. Burt himself appears in the film in the role of Nate Scarborough, a football legend who has been behind bars forever and offers to coach his fellow inmates. The warden (JAMES CROMWELL) is against the whole thing and finds a way to blackmail Crewe into throwing the game. The game itself is well presented. Watch for the cheerleaders on the inmate's team. Hysterical. There is some clever casting for the inmate's team. We have real football players (Bill Romanowski, Brian Bosworth) and wrestling stars Steve Austin and Bill Goldberg. I came out of the theatre felling good about this film. I think you will too. SEE YA AT THE MOVIES CLYDE
