The Man

A Film Review By Clyde Ayles

A BAD MAN

"The Man" is one of those cop/  man on the street movies like "Lethal Weapon". You know the kind, the cop in pursuit of a criminal nabs the poor unsuspecting man off the street to assist him, putting the poor boob in dangerous situations.      This time it's SAMUEL L. JACKSON  , too good for this role, as the cop who mistakes a dental supply salesman ( EUGENE LEVY) for an underworld contact who is working for a crook named Booty (ANTHONY MACKIE). Police agent Vann (Jackson) suspects that Booty is responsible for his partner's death. A killing that Vann is being blamed for.            He recruits Andy Fidler (Levy) to help him set up a sting to trap Booty into a confession.  The results have a few funny moments, but not enough to sustain an 80 minute movie. Thank goodness director LES MAYFIELD had the good judgment to keep it short. There is also the usual story within that involves the cop who is divorced, but has a little girl who always finds that her dad is too busy to attend her ballet recitals. The banter between Jackson and Levy sometimes reminded me of Jimmy Fallon and Quenn Latifah in that awful "Taxi"    Dumb.  SEE YA AT THE MOVIES   CLYDE
