Valiant

A Film Review By Clyde Ayles

FLYING HIGH

In World War 2 many types of animals were used to great effect. Included were the homing pigeons. They carried messages back and forth from enemy lines to help us win the war. Our story centers on one little pigeon and his friends. Valiant (voiced by EWAN McGREGOR) idolizes the brave pigeons who work with the RHPS (Royal Homing Pigeon Service). They are his heroes. He dreams of joining them one day. After he hears of three of his heroes have been downed by a dark shadow that swoops down on them just as they reach the famed White Cliffs of Dover while on a mission. Gutsy, the iconic hero of the RHPS (voiced by HUGH LAURIE, from t.v.s "House") realizes that with so many losses he will have to recruit new birds. The enemies here are the Germen Falcons who guard the channel.                                                                                                                            Away from the war we see a group of the birds watching a newsreel (a great takeoff of the old Pathe newsreels from the 40's) at the local watering pub. Now Valiant is ready to go to war. He is talking to a publican Felix (voiced by JOHN HURT), a squad from the RHPS led by Gutsy on a recruiting drive. Valiant wants to enlist, but is chided for being too little. But he sets off to become a member, much to the dismay of his mother who tries everything to keep her baby home.  He flies to London and intervertently rescues an artful dodger named Bugsy (voiced by RICKY GERVAIS) who in turn helps our little hero get into the RHPS. From there the story takes off to many riveting adventures where we meet many new characters voiced by a list of stars. These include TIM CURRY, JIM BROADBENT, JOHN CLEESE, RIK MAYALL, and the list goes on. Walt Disney pictures releases the film from Vanguard Animation. The kids and adults too will enjoy this movie.                                        PRODUCTION NOTE:    The film was developed by Vanguard Animation in Los Angeles and historic Ealing Studios in London. The same studio used by George Lukas for "Star Wars; Episode 2 Attack Of The Clones".  SEE YA AT THE MOVIES   CLYDE
