War of the Worlds

A Film Review By Clyde Ayles

NO CLOSE ENCOUNTERS

Well here we are with another remake. This time we have STEVEN SPIELBERG to thank. I remember the original film from 1953 starring Gene Barry. For it's time it was very well done. The Martians and their ships were impressive. So it is to Mr. Spielberg's credit that he pays tribute to that film by using some of the same likeness of these things                 This time the story centers around a father (TOM CRUISE), his teenage son (JUSTIN CHATWIN) and 10 year old daughter (DAKOTA FANNING)   As he takes charge of his family so his ex-wife and her new husband can take a trip, things start happening, strange things. The sky gets an dark weird color as lightning strikes over and over again. Suddenly this large tripod comes from under ground and begins to destroy everything in it's path. Everyone panics and tries to get away. Smart move. We learn that the tripods are alien ships that have been underground for quite some time and that the Martians traveled down the lightning bolts in pods to man the ships and destroy earth . They probably saw some of the movies that are out there.                                                                                          For the first half hour or so this film is just another disaster movie. But things get good as we see the Martian probes and the Martians themselves who look like a cross between a rat and an armadillo. Very affective, and surely not the nice friendly visitors from "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind".                                                                                            The effects are great, 11 year old Dakota is just as winning as ever, but I still feel it lacked something. The only person I cared about was Dakota Fanning. Although, H.G. Wells would be proud of the way Steven Spielberg handled his story. SEE YA AT THE MOVIES   CLYDE
