Glory Road

A Film Review By Clyde Ayles

APPLAUSE PLEASE

Yes, it's been done before.  A team of young atheletes on a misfit team who overcome all sorts of downfalls to be a winner. The coach who has more faith in them than they do. Based on a true story  Sound familiar?.But i found something different in "Glory Road"  In 1966 coach Don Haskins (JOSH LUCAS, in a fine performance that will make you forgive "Stealth". Haskins was hired in 1961 to coach the Texas Western Miners basketball team. They won the     NCAA championshipp in 1966. But there were a lot of setbacks along the way.The team was a combination of whites and blacks. Thie fact that there were blacks did not set well with a lot of sports fans, Mainly in the south, First the whites and blacks did not get along, calling each other racist names.  Then came the day they stopped at a diner  with disasterous results.  But they knew that with determination and a driving coach, they could overcome. The games are exciting, the human side is well told.  DEREK LUKE, last seen in the very good "Friday Night Llghts" heads the great cast of  black atheletes. First time director JAMES GARTNER has painted a beautiful portrait of the events. At the screening I saw it at in New York the audience              stood and cheered at the end of the film. NOTE:  Do not leave as the end credits roll. You will meet the real players of this drama, and hear their thoughts.    SEE YA AT THE MOVIES   CLYDE   What Did You Think About The Film E-mail us Your Comments About The Film
