A Film Review By Clyde Ayles
LONG LIVE THE QUEEN
I have always had fun watching QUEEN LATIFAH on the movie screen. She always looks like she is having a good time doing what she is doing. She was the only good thing in "Taxi" and "Beauty Shop". As I watched her latest, "Last Holiday", I came away with the same feeling. Still loving the Queen. In this film she is Georgia Bird, a bored store clerk who accidentally gets hit on the head. She is taken to a doctor who reveals to her that she has a fatal illness and has three weeks to live. She promply takes all of her savings out of the bank, quits her job, and takes off on adventures she only dreamed of. She goes on a European journey, checks in to the richest hotel, goes skiing, pampers herself in the massage parlor, and on one evening orders every special on the menu in the hotel dining room. In doing so she endears herself to the famous chef of the dining room, (GERARD DEPARDIEU). They become good friends, much to the dismay of her former boss (TIMOTHY HUTTON) who is also visiting the hotel with his female assistant. Of course you know that this is not just business. As her former boss tries to expose Georgia, the hotel thinks she is a big shot, things get out of hand and go down the the road of very funny moments. The film is directed by WAYNE WANG who adapted it from a 1950 Alec Guinness feature. Ms Latifah is no Alec Guinness, but she sure holds her own. L.L. COOL J costars.
