A Film Review By Clyde Ayles

A TAIL WAGGING STORY

In 1959 Walt Disney pictures gave us a very funny man's best friend story. IN THIS VERSION OF "The Shaggy Dog"  then teen idol Tommy Kirk, a Disney staple, starred as Wilby Daniels, a young boy who turns into a sheep dog after being cursed by an ancient amulet. I had the pleasure of meeting Tommy Kirk a few years ago and he talked about the fun he had making this film.   Now here we are in 2006 and there is a remake of "The Shaggy Dog"  starring TIM ALLEN ( "The Santa Clause 1& 2).  And Mr. Allen also had his share of fun making this film, and it shows. The good times and fun will rub off on you.  In this version, Tim Allen plays D. A. Dave Douglas who is bitten by a by an acient shaggy dog from Tibbet. The dog (played by a lovable shaggy dog named Coal and five others, including a mechanical dog, steals the show.. The dog bite has a very strange effect on the D. A.  He turns into a shaggy dog. This helps him to understand why his teenage daughter (ZENA GREY) is picketing a research lab that is using animals for testing.  As he begins to act more like a dog, in many very funny scenes, he is dismissed by his boss, Ken Hollister (DANNY GLOVER).   Playing the villian, Dr. Kozak, is ROBERT DOWNEY JR., one of my favorite actors.   KRISTIN DAVIS (H.B.O's "Sex and the City"  plays the D. A.'s  very confused wife. The laugh provoking scenes are many.  It's a roar when Tim, as a human takes on the canine ways, such as chasing a cat, getting sniffed by dogs on an elevater,  or lapping up his morning cereal .When he is trapped in a cage in the lab as a dog, but escapes as a man taking all the animals with him is classic.  Wait until you see these animals who have been the subject of testing gone wrong.  You will split your sides.   All this is done in good taste for the animal lovers out there, of which I am one.  Take the family, you will all have a grand time.  SEE YA AT THE MOVIES    CLYDE
