Maguire as SpidermanSpider-Man (Peter Benjamin Parker) is a fictional Marvel Comics superhero created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Since his incarnation and first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 (Aug. 1962), he has become one of the world's most popular, enduring and commercially successful superheroes. When Spider-Man first saw print in the 1960s, teenage characters in superhero comic books were usually sidekicks. The Spider-Man series broke ground by featuring a hero who himself was an adolescent, to whose "self-obsessions with rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness" young readers could relate. Spider-Man has since appeared in various media including several animated and live-action television series, syndicated newspaper comic strips and a successful series of films. Marvel has published several Spider-Man comic book series, the first being The Amazing Spider-Man. Mary Jane Watson-Parker is wife of Peter Parker (Spider Man) and a supporting character in the Marvel Comics' Spider-Man series. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist John Romita, Sr., after a few partial appearances and references, she finally first fully appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #42 (November 1966). A gorgeous, green-eyed redhead, she has been the primary romantic interest of Spider-Man’s alter ego Peter Parker for the last twenty years, although she initially competed against others for his affection, most prominently with Gwen Stacy and the Black Cat. Today, Mary Jane is considered an important part of the Spider-Man series and has been featured in most other media adaptations of the character. John Jonah Jameson (also known as J. Jonah Jameson, J.J. or J.J.J.) is a fictional supporting character featured in Marvel Comics’s Spider-Man series. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, he first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (March 1963). Jameson is the publisher and editor-in-chief of the Daily Bugle, a fictional New York newspaper. Recognizable by his mustache, flattop haircut and ever-present cigar, he carries out an Ahab-like smear campaign against Spider-Man that has turned much of the city against the hero. Ironically, he employs Spider-Man’s alter ego Peter Parker as a photojournalist. Portrayals of Jameson have varied throughout the years. Sometimes he is shown as a foolishly stubborn and pompous skinflint who micromanages his employees and resents Spider-Man out of jealousy. Other writers have portrayed him more humanly, as a humorously obnoxious yet caring boss who nevertheless has shown great bravery and integrity in the face of the assorted villains the Bugle comes into contact with, and whose campaign against Spider-Man comes more from fear of youngsters following his example. Gwendolyne "Gwen" Stacy is a fictional character that has been a supporting character in Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man series. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, she first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #31 (Dec. 1965). A blonde college co-ed, Gwen was the first true love of the nerdy Peter Parker (Spider-Man). His adversary the Green Goblin murdered Gwen in the The Amazing Spider-Man #121 (June 1973). Both the decision to kill Gwen and the method in which Marvel implemented it are controversial among fans, but it is still a pivotal point in both Spider-Man’s history and in American comic books in general.
